An Introduction To Contact Lenses

Contact Lens (Image from Turners Optometrists)

The question of whether or not to switch from glasses to contact lenses is one that a lot of people face at one point or another for a variety of reasons. Because a lot of younger children are not comfortable with contacts when they first require corrective vision, many start off with glasses. Then, they may consider a switch down the road, whether as adolescents or even in adulthood. For some, glasses remain the best option, but popular reasons for considering a switch include the following:

  • Fashion - Make no mistake, glasses can be extremely fashionable. In fact, you can even find everyday frames from high-end designers like Gucci or Prada. However, there's no denying that contact lenses allow for a bit more versatility in style. With contacts, you can choose to wear nothing on your eyes, wear glasses for the sake of fashion, but with clear lenses, and even take advantage of sunglasses trends.

  • Athletics - While glasses are just fine for certain athletic activities, contact lenses allow for more freedom of movement, and also enable the wearer to take advantage of sunglasses, swimming goggles, helmets, etc. more easily when necessary.

  • Convenience - At time, people simply get tired of keeping track of glasses, keeping them cleaned, etc. While contact lenses still require upkeep and care, you don't have to worry about them during the day.

It's a different decision for each individual, but those represent a few of the most common reasons for people to consider switching to contacts. And once people make the determination to switch, there's a whole new set of concerns in figuring out which lenses best suit them! Acuvue UK is home to a number of references and posts on the topic of choosing and then adjusting to contact lenses. The following is several of their helpful information for beginners:

  • Hard vs. Soft - Hard and soft are the two main types of contact lenses, and each has different benefits. Hard lenses are more durable, worn for longer, and are capable of correcting pretty much any vision issue you may have. However, they're generally less comfortable and harder to get used to. Soft lenses need replacing more often and may not correct certain more severe problems (such as irregular astigmatism), but they are more comfortable and easy to adjust to and handle.

  • Daily vs. Monthly - Really, this decision comes down largely to personal preference. But if you opt for soft lenses (a more common choice for beginners), you'll have the option of choosing how often you want to recycle lenses. Dailies are convenient in that you don't have to continue caring for them, but you need to manage your supply carefully; monthlies require proper cleaning and storage.

  • Toric vs. Spherical - Toric lenses are used to correct astigmatism, which is a vision condition in which the eye's surface is of an irregular shape, causing distorted vision. Spherical lenses correct the more common issues of myopia (short-sightedness) and hyperopia (long-sightedness). This is more an issue for your optician to help you with, but it can't hurt to understand the basics of different lenses.

I myself am a wear of prescription glasses, I have to wear them for long distance such as for driving. I am happy with wearing glasses for now as I do only have to wear them for short periods of time. However I have been considering contact lenses lately, and I also love the fact that you can even get coloured/effect prescription contacts now, so in the same way you could wear glasses for fashion and appearance, you could also achieve this with contacts to change your appearance!

If you do decide to make the switch, and figure out which lenses are best for you, you'll need to learn how to wear them, clean them and, if you don't opt for daily disposables, store them. But the above guide will help with the basics of switching to contacts!

As I mentioned in a couple of my recent posts, I was treated to a weekend away for my birthday with my boyfriend. We have stayed in a lodge before (click here to read about that one) and we both enjoyed it so I was looking forward to the same kind of experience again. This time we stayed at Penllwyn Lodges in Powys, Wales.

As soon as we drove into the park we noticed just how beautiful the surroundings were! We were greeted by a few farm animals including a Llama, a donkey, a couple of pigs and sheep, which was really cute! We checked in at reception and were greeted by Sam the Parrot! We were shown the directions to our lodge by the lovely staff, and although it was right at the top of a rather steep hill, the roads were easy to drive up and we parked right outside the lodge, so great access!

We stayed in the Mountain Lodge, which is a multi-storey lodge and sleeps up to 6 people, however there were only the 2 of us staying, so it was super spacious for us! There is a balcony at the front of the lodge overlooking the beautiful woodland and Welsh hills, we stopped to admire the view with a cuppa for a while!

Inside the lodge, the ground floor comprised of a large kitchen/dining/lounge area with huge windows overlooking the golf course, three reasonably sized bedrooms, and a small but modern shower room. On the first floor was the cutest/cosiest lounge area I've ever seen. Although I personally found the decor a little outdated, it was very clean and well maintained and it fits in with the surroundings really well!

We did go for a wander along the canal and around the fishing pool and gardens which is home to ducks and swans. On site there are 18 other lodges, and a golf club and restaurant. It was just really nice to be outside and enjoying the countryside to be honest! Even though it was winter there was still plenty of wildlife around, the squirrels were always outside the lodge when we looked out the windows so that was nice too, and I heard many different birds around, so great if you're a wildlife lover!

We enjoyed each others company, and it was lovely to "pretend" it was like our own little house and not have to answer to anyone! We are both still living at home with our parents so don't get our own space very often! We cooked our own meals and had plenty of booze and just watched TV and films and chilled out. Just what we needed, a very relaxing and stress-free break, together!

So a huge thank you to my lovely boyfriend for organising this, and we are looking forward to our next break which I've booked for us for Valentines! ;) ❤

I received this gorgeous LUSH Snow Fairy Gift Box at Christmas from my boyfriend. It came pre-packaged in the cutest pink wrapping paper complete with its own silvery ribbon and even a little bell which made it all Christmas-sy! I already loved it before I opened it haha. The box contains three of their most cherished products which are:

"Our classic candy scented shimmering shower gel"
This little beauty is a limited edition product and is only released for the Christmas period, which means I've literally been waiting all year to try out this product after reading some lovely reviews of it last year! I'm so glad I finally got my hands on this! I cannot even begin to describe how amazingly sweet and candy like this product smells, so I'd recommend you just try it out for yourself when you can get your hands on it. The bottle is only 100ml in size, but this is no problem as it's great for travelling and also you don't need to use much because the formula lathers up so well! It leaves my skin feeling well cleansed, silky smooth and smelling delicious!

"Smooth this vanilla scented shimmy all over your skin and sparkle like a disco diva"
I've never come across anything quite like this before. This pretty, glittery, shimmering heart shaped bar will leave your skin looking radiant and glowing! All you have to do is gently stroke the bar onto any area that you want to highlight. The warmth of your skin will cause the bar to melt lightly, leaving a golden lustre perfect for a night out to add some sparkle, or in the summer time to give your skin a sunkissed look! The bar has a very slight vanilla scent, so nothing too overpowering. It also contains shea and cocoa butter to leave your skin feeling soft and smooth.

"Super fruity and festive soap, to raise your Christmas spirits"
I was so confused trying to find this soap on the LUSH website?! They must have merged the original pretty colourful glittery full sized Angel's delight to form this pastel pink star shaped bar for the Christmas gifts! A little disappointing if people had ordered this from the website expecting it to look like the image shown! Nevertheless, this pretty little thing smells so good, it really does smell fruity, but also smells similar to the Snow Fairy Shower Gel too. I found that the soap lathered up well, and the scent lasted a long time on my skin after use.

Overall I am so happy with this gift, and it's been a great introduction for me to LUSH products! I will definitely consider their products more often next time I'm out shopping. Although the scent that comes from their shops is very overpowering and has often put me off in the past, their products are definitely worth a shot!

Introduction + Review | My Beauty Compare

I was recently sent an email introducing me to a new price comparison website, now I'm no stranger to these kind of websites, I mean we've all been there with car insurance etc, which is an absolute nightmare may I add! However this is a new website for beauty products. This website will help you choose and compare the prices on beauty products from over 1,500 brands, and include skincare, haircare, makeup, body and even fragrances! What is this website I hear you ask? Well, it's My Beauty Compare of course! The world's first of it's kind!

All you need to do to get started is create an account and fill in a short questionnaire about yourself which includes questions such as skin type and colour, hair colour, eye colour, problems you have with your skin etc. It only took me around 5 minutes to complete, and this then allows My Beauty Compare to find the products best suited to you! There is also a forum where you can chat with other beauty fanatics just like you to get advice and reviews on the products you're looking to purchase, great idea for us beauty bloggers!

We all love finding a bargain, so why not head on over and create your profile now?!

Models Own Dogs Trust Limited Edition Nail Polish 25 Carat Gold - Review, Swatches, Giveaway "A Dog is for life not just for christmas" #presspaws campaign

Today I have another nail product from Models Own to share with you! This time, they've teamed up with the nation's largest dog welfare charity Dogs Trust to bring you this beautiful Limited Edition nail varnish! This sparkly golden nail varnish is a fun way for supporters to add a touch of sparkle to their own "paws", whilst also showing support for a worthy cause!

The polish itself is called "25 Carat Gold" which is part of Models Own standard colour range but has been re-designed to feature a very cute paw patterned lid, and to celebrate 35 years of the "A Dog Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas" slogan. The polish itself is a brilliantly metallic, shiny yellow gold colour, perfect for an eye-catching manicure, and to get people's attention and get them talking! I decided to change it up a little by adding a matte top coat to my accent nail and doing a little paw design too :)  As always with Models Own nail polishes, application was easy and smooth and had a non-streaky finish. I should also mention that Models Own are proudly "furry friendly" and their approach to animal testing is simple. They don't do it!

It has been released to drive the importance of responsible dog ownership and coincides with their latest #presspaws campaign, where the Dogs Trust charity is asking dog lovers to help spread the idea of pausing to think "am I in a position to socialise, train and look after a dog for the rest of it's life?" by tweeting a paw-touching picture of their own dogs!

The limited edition Dogs Trust Models Own Nail Polish* will retail at £5.50(plus £1 P&P) and is available from www.dogstrust.org.uk/shopping. All profits from each bottle sold will go to the Dogs Trust to help save and improve the lives of more dogs. Remember, they are for human paws only, as dog paws are perfect just the way they are ;)

I have very kindly been supplied with 4 of these nail polishes to give away to you lovely lot! There are various ways to enter...

Birthday Haul ♥

As promised, here is my Birthday Haul post! I had so many lovely gifts, cards and money from all my family and friends, I was totally overwhelmed and had such a nice day(once I escaped from work anyway)! I have just come back from a weekend break with my boyfriend Ashley so that's the reason why this post is a little delayed, I will have a post coming up about that coming soon. But for now, its back to reality, work and life in general. I hope you enjoy this post anyway, who doesn't love a good haul!?

birthday haul blog post
birthday haul blog post - babyliss designer gift set hairdryer and handbag
My parents bought me this Babyliss Designer Gift Set from Boots, which you can now find in the sale for just £14.99! It comes with a beautiful handbag which was perfect to take as a travel bag on our weekend break, and various hair styling accessories too!
birthday haul blog post - soap and glory sugar crush gift, boots gift set, boots half price soap and glory gift
I've been wanting to try Soap and Glory for ages, and I really like their Sugar Crush range, it smells delicious! I was delighted when I unwrapped this Soap & Glory Sugar Crush Gift Set from my sister! I really wanted to buy this in the sale but there was none left once I finally got round to shopping after Christmas.
birthday haul blog post - Pretty Patisserie Pamper Set & Lip Balm Boots
My sister also bought me these cute gift sets from "Pretty Patisserie" she told me it was from Boots too, but I hadn't seen these in store over the Christmas period, must have been re-stocked afterwards. In the vanity case there are a range of deliciously food scented shower gels, and then the lip balm trio are cake scented. I really like the packaging, I'll definitely be keeping the case for storage!
birthday haul blog post - Oral B Trizone 1000 Electric Toothbrush
My brother bought me the Oral B Tri-Zone 1000 Electric Toothbrush which was in my Birthday Wishlist post
birthday haul blog post - Primark Duvet Set
This cute floral duvet set was another gift from my parents, I think it was reduced to £6 in their sale, which isn't bad at all!
birthday haul blog post - Sweets! jelly Babies, Rainbow Drops& Baileys Gift Set Boots
My family know me too well! The baileys miniature will go down a treat!
birthday haul blog post - Primark Pretty Floral Thermal Mug
This cute ditsy floral travel mug was from Primark too, I'm pretty sure their mugs are only around £2? Total bargain and great to take to work. This is definitely the cutest one I've seen so far.
birthday haul blog post - Boots No1 Vanilla and Roasted Chestnut Candle
Who doesn't love a nice scented candle? This one was from my parents, and it was from Boots No.24 range. It smells really nice and seasonal for this time of year, the vanilla isn't too musky either which is a good thing in my books!
birthday haul blog post - Primark Pretty Floral Dress Lace Sleeves
I'd seen this dress a couple of times in Primark in their sale, but could only find a size 8, my mom somehow managed to find a size 10, which I can hopefully squeeze into haha!I really like the pattern and its such a nice  shape, and the lace sleeves are so cute!
birthday haul blog post - Nicki Minaj Pink Friday Gift set Boots
My parents also bought me this Nicki Minaj Pink Friday gift set, my mom said it was half price in the Boots sale, another good bargain. I bought this perfume earlier on in the year and I surprisingly really liked it. So I was very grateful for a new bottle! There's even a little roll on handbag sized perfume included too.
Finally, these are two of the gifts that Ashley bought me and surprised me with while we were away for the weekend. He also bought me some clothes which I didn't photograph at the time. I totally wasn't expecting anything as he had already paid for the break! But, my boy did good ;) ♥

Unboxed Contents | Boots Christmas Advent Calendar 2013

boots beauty advent calendar unboxed, contents and review of boots beauty advent calendar 2013, boots beauty advent calendar 2013, 24 days of beauty treats bootsboots beauty advent calendar unboxed, contents and review of boots beauty advent calendar 2013, boots beauty advent calendar 2013, 24 days of beauty treats boots

First of all I will apologise for the poor quality of these photos. I took them using my phone rather than my camera as the battery was flat at the time. Anyway, some of you may have seen this already on my Instagram (@laurasallmadeup - do feel free to add me!). My boyfriend very kindly bought me the Boots "24 Days Of Beauty Treats" Advent Calendar back in November, but me being me, I tucked it away and forgot about it! Until just after Christmas, where I opened the whole thing in one go, and unveiled the contents which are as follows:

Balmi Lip Balm
Boots Salon Nail Shine Solution
Botanics Heat Protection Shine Serum
Carmex Moisturising Lip Balm
Ghost Fragrance
Juicy Couture Fragrance
Mavala Polish in London 53
Mavala Polish in Pure Diamond 213
Nails Inc in Porchester Square
Nail File
Nina Fragrance
Orly Bonder Base Coat
Paco Robanne Black XS Fragrance
Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation in Ivory
Seventeen Tattoo Me Liquid Eyeliner
Seventeen Blow Out Mascara
Seventeen Supreme Shine Nail Polish
Soap and Glory Clean Girls Body Wash
Soap & Glory Scrub
Umberto Ginannini Hair Tie
Umberto Giannini Glam Hair Back Comb in a Bottle
Vichy Idealia Life Serum
Vichy LifeActiv Serum 10

The calendar was priced at £30, and the contents were said to be worth over £65, which all in all was pretty good value, and once I've opened up the calendar I can see they do add up to this. Although I was a little disappointed that there were FIVE perfume samples included, which are free anyway! I really liked the Balmi Lip Balm (although it was Mint flavoured instead of Strawberry as stated on the reverse of the calendar) the Soap and Glory products, and the various nail varnishes!

Did you get any beauty advent calendars for Christmas? What was your favourite product?
